Summary

  • The domination of Star Fleet by medium and light cruisers ends in this decade.[1]
  • The "modern" Larson class destroyer (Mk VII) plays a relatively minor role.[2]
  • As many as 200 buoy tenders are active.[3]
  • Operations by the Ohio class light fleet tugs move farther and farther away from home.[4]
  • The Tavares class is the virtual standard light transport of Federation deep space commerce agencies.[5]
  • Klingon raids by cloaked privateer ships are a frequent nuisance.[6]
  • Star Fleet gains access to all-new propulsion technologies of great performance—linear excitation warp engines—which upsets the balance of logistics strategy.[7][8]
  • For the fifteen year period spanning 2275 to 2289, Star Fleet is well-stocked in exploratory cruisers.[9]
  • The Centaurus force continues to provide the Fleet's short-range scouting needs.[10]
  • Enforcement of Federation law leads to many a boarding action this decade.[11]
  • Beginning: The AIG evaluates the weaknesses of the current "Blue Shield" (the Andorian fleet presence along their region of the Romulan Neutral Zone) and see a lack of Star Fleet cruisers, aging Blue Fleet frigates, low numbers of modern destroyers, and ground forces at historic low levels of readiness. It initiates a domestic design and production of a new AIG cruiser.[12]
  • Early: Starships equipped with the F1 or F3 designs and their accompanying aft-loading cargo hauler counterparts gradually convert to an integrated fleet of Type 1 craft.[13]
  • Mid-decade: The Huntington class tankers assume more and more of the role of medium tanker from the Arcadia fleet tanker/tender class.[14]
  • Mid-decade: Operational strategies change to favor heavier and faster local defense vessels, and corvettes face a reassignment back to law enforcement duties.[15]
  • Mid-decade: As Daring class heavy corvettes start being commissioned, the Procyon class corvettes are retired.
The term used was "gradually bowed out"; presumption is decommissioning.
  • Mid-decade: Orion's initiate a brief resurgence of pirate activity when Star Fleet’s frontier campaigns drive the slave hunters back towards inner UFP space convoys.[16]
  • Mid-decade: Funding no longer presents a problem for cruiser acquisition programs.[17]
  • Later decade: Star Fleet’s crusade brings back the confidence of the commercial operators in the outer trade routes as piracy is drastically reduced in the Federation. An explosion of operations by Tavares light transports occurs across the inner sectors and the colonization zone alike.[18][5]
  • Late: The Nightshield private military corporation secures the first of dozens of colonial escort contracts.[19]
  • Towards the end: The Archers began showing signs of their age; units begin being removed from frontline duties.[20]
  • Towards the end: Chandley class strike frigates begin participating in intelligence operations against Klingon forces, raiding lone vessels in disputed space.[21]

Events

  • By: The Whirlwind assault ships are rapidly approaching the limits of space-worthiness, but will be maintained because of the delay in the Makin class.[23]
  • A major reshuffling of the Klingon High Council ends.[24]
  • Star Fleet starts several ambitious programs to construct a new generation of dreadnoughts.[25]
  • Cruiser and light cruiser numbers plummet.[26][27]
Specifically in 2275.
  • The decommissioning of older Texas sub-class light cruisers begins, with the Navigators generally being sold abroad to allies of secondary import, while the Mojaves are scrapped. (USS Duquesne and USS Pacific are a few of the Mojaves that are mothballed.)[27]
  • The use of former Hale class scouts as training facilities for firefighting and sealing crews is discontinued.[29]
  • Additional decommissioned Independences are turned into commercial cargo drones.[18]
  • Production starts on local variants of the (old) Guardian class heavy escort at Andess and Lactra.[30]
  • All of the Flamsteed class scout drones, and all but one of the Fraunhofers, have been lost in action by this decade.[31]
  • Most Constitution class heavy cruisers most retain their initial external decorations through this decade's round of extensive refits.[32]
The original statement suggests that this decade saw more individualization of external markings of the remaining class ships, but this seems doubtful. Instead, I'm interpreting this to mean that variations remained rare in the class and then fully regulated now.
  • Frigate funds are directed to the Daran and Knox designs.[33]
  • The Vulcan Science Directorate's T'Pari surveyors make themselves useful in local survey work during the transitionary period from deep-space missions.[34]
  • The newly-upgraded K’Kmarak surveyors of the Vulcan Science Directorate resume charting of rimward space.[34]
This occurs at some point in this decade, regardless of the completion of the entire modification process.
  • USS Montana (NCC-F663, Ohio light fleet tug) goes missing near Izar.[4]
  • The registry for ships exceeds the 2700 range for the first time.[33]
  • Seven Okinawa class light frigates are lost during this decade's adventurism.[8]
  • A majority of the Mission class ships (all variants) are sold forward to civilian operators.[35]
  • The escort fleet begins receiving the superb LN-61 nacelle.[36]
  • Late: At least fifty missions of commandeering civilian craft for intelligence gathering are documented.[37]
  • Early: The Ohio class light fleet tugs receive modern communication gear.[4]
  • Early: The Federation class dreadnoughts lay dormant in starbases for most of this portion of the decade.[38]
  • Early: At least three Chandley class strike frigates adopt an alligator motif for their external hulls.[21]
  • Mid: Roughly half of the pre-Mk VII Larson destroyers are mothballed; the remainder serve in two squadrons alongside the "modern" Larsons.[2]
  • Late: The orderly withdrawal and deactivation of the remaining Cahuya class survey cruisers begins.[39][40]
  • Late: The mixed-Larson flotillas are disbanded.[2]
