Seal of the Andorian Empire

The Andorian Empire, also known as the Andorian Star Clan and the Andorian Star Empire, was the name of the Andorian state. Centered on the moon of Andoria, the Andorian Empire was one of the five founding member states of the United Federation of Planets, having signed the Articles of the Federation on 12 August 2161.[1]

History

  • 19th century: The Andorian Empire is founded with the victory of Thalisar's forces over that of the remaining independent warring clans. She establishes the Parliament Andoria, as well as the position of Chancellor.[2]
This suggests that warp capability might have been provided to the Andorians by the Vulcans, since the former had not yet established a colony even in their own system. Maybe this is the initiation of the hostilities, if the Andorians broke trust with the Vulcans after acquiring (or by acquiring?) warp technology.
  • September 1996: The Andorian Empire is formed upon the establishment of the first offworld colony.[1]
  • 2045: The Andorian Empire reaches its height with the possession of thirteen colonies outside their home system.[1]
  • 2152: The Andorians and Vulcans begin discussions mediated by the Humans.[3]
  • 2165: The radical group "Keepers of the Throne" begin killing Arkenite members of the colonial population of Alrond, in retaliation for Arken II's admission into the Federation.[8]
  • 2385: The legislature of the Andorian Empire, the Parliament Andoria, votes to repeal the 2382 secession ordinance and reapply for admission into the United Federation of Planets, which is fast-tracked.[1]

Government

The Andorian Empire is a constitutional monarchy, established in the 19th century with the unification of the planet from warring clans by Thalisar the Last. She deliberately died childless and created the parliamentary democracy that has governed Andoria ever since. The position of head of state is symbolically left empty, represented by the Empty Throne of the Andorian Empire, found in the Parliament Andoria Complex. The head of government is the Presider, whose seat is determined by the political party that has a majority in the legislature, the Parliament Andoria.

Notes

  • At some point between the Andorians achieving warp capability and founding the UFP (2161), the Arkenites became their subjects. While relatively aggressive (in comparison to Humans), the former doesn't require the Andorians to "capture" worlds from other species. The events surrounding the disaster on the Azha-R7a mining colony in 2259, wherein the Arkenites briefly "joined" the Klingon Empire, suggest the Arkenites—as a culture—may readily trade their sovereignty for assistance. There may be a similar story in regards to their relationship with the Andorian Empire, especially since they were freed from subjectivity prior to the UFP's founding.
  • FASA (and Memory Beta) hold that the Andorians established sublight colonies prior to achieving warp capability, which is certainly supportable. However, the year 2118 is too late for our canon.
