The Confederacy of Vulcan was the Vulcan state and one of the five founding Federation member states. Prior to the Founding of the Federation, the Confederacy was a major interstellar power throughout what later became the core Federation worlds and participated in a long-standing rivalry with the Andorian Empire.[1]
History
- By 3000 BCE: Vulcan has developed a polytheistic religion and the first of the "mental wars" take place, using psionic powers and various psi-weaponry.[2]
- It was almost 3,000 years old at the time of the episode.
- By the 4th century: Vulcan is rife with violence and war, arising from the desire for conquest and need for water resources. Warfare is constant, including several attacks with atomic weapons. Industry is no longer capable of supporting warp flight.[5][2][4]
- 312: On Vulcan, The Time of Awakening begins, as Surak begins to write of his theories on logic and emotionalism. He calls for an end to the constants wars through a new philosophy of total logic.[6][7][2]
- SFC maintains that warp units had originally been clandestinely produced by scientists for the warlord Sudoc, purloined by Tellus for the 369 exodus' scout vessels.
- 1270: An armada of invading spaceships pour forth from a new wormhole that has formed near Vulcan and opens intermittently.[5][8]
- 1376: The intermittent wormhole closes for the final time; the invaders are hunted down and destroyed at their forward bases within the star system, but their identities are never discovered.[5]
- The year is SFC-specific; derived from "after a century of constant warfare...".
- 1535: The Vulcan High Command, a military technocracy, forms and eventually assumes planetary control of the Confederacy of Vulcan.[2]
- Mid-19th century: Vulcan survey missions to Earth begin.[2]
- This will continue into the 1970s.
- 2027: Due to the deteriorating political condition on Earth, and the growing risk of nuclear war, Vulcan survey missions are formally ended.[2]
- 2135: By this time, Vulcan has the following colonies:
- 2114: The Vulcan High Command signs the highly significant "Treaty for Scientific Cooperation" with the United Earth Defense Pact, in which Vulcan will provide technical and scientific information concerning warp flight in exchange for Earth severely curtailing its warp program and proceeding only with Vulcan approval.[2]
- 2155: Alpha Centauri, Andoria, Earth, Tellar Prime, Vulcan, and minor worlds (including Axanar and Kaferia) approve a first draft agreement for an alliance to be formed for trade, cultural exchange, and mutual protection.[10]
- 2161: The governments of Alpha Centauri, Andoria, Earth, Tellar Prime, and Vulcan sign the Articles of the Federation; Vulcan joins the United Federation of Planets.
- 2218: A Vulcan nationalist group, similar to Earth First, starts to gain support, due in part to increasing Klingon hostility.[11]
