Commendations

Commendations are generally unit-level awards presented by the commanding officer to recognize noteworthy service to or onboard that particular command. Department heads (often) initiate the recommendations up to the command staff, but the immediate flag officer must approve the request before they can be presented. When circumstances warrant, the flag officer may present the award, in which case it is designated as a "flag commendation".
