Background: Continuing Mission

Written by "Jester" David Gibson for Continuing Mission fan site.

Overview: Built by the Vulcan Confederacy, D’Kyr combat cruisers were the principal battleships of the Vulcan fleet. Worried about the building conflict with the Andorians, D’Kyr ships were designed to counter Andorian battlecruisers. While they possessed slightly inferior firepower compared to an Andorian Kumari-class, they were durable, swiftly constructed, and easily upgraded. D’Kyr ships soon became the bulk of the military arm of the Vulcan fleet. The class saw combat in the Battle of Andoria in 2154, and multiple D’Kyr vessels fought in the Coalition of Planets’ fleet during the Earth-Romulan War. Following the founding of the United Federation of Planets, D’Kyr cruisers were loaned to Star Fleet as border patrol vessels, with several retained by Vulcan for planetary defense. Initially commissioned by Vulcan High Command solely for combat missions, refits enabled the ships to be used for humanitarian and relief missions, as well as even scientific and exploratory assignments. Vulcans, being less prone to entirely redesign ships than Humans, continued to use the base D’Kyr design for over a century.

Capabilities: Like many Vulcan ships, the D’Kyr has a distinct ring-shaped warp nacelle around a cylindrical hull. This allows the ship great speed and high engine efficiency, but limits its maneuverability at even low warp speeds. The warp torus is typically positioned vertically, so it is perpendicular to the hull. While the engine is powered down, the ring can be rotated 90-degrees into a reinforced subsection, protecting it from navigational hazards. In planned combat operations, the torus can also be rotated into the more protected horizontal position; however, as restarting the warp engines and rotating the torus takes several minutes, it is not done if the ship expects to pursue fleeing vessels or wishes to retain the ability to retreat. D’Kyr vessels posses superior firepower to the Earth Starfleet’s NX-class, being armed with photonic and particle energy weapons, as well as deflector shields. Like most Vulcan ships, the D’Kyr was designed for practicality and functionality, with few amenities. Ships were crewed by 125 to 150 officers, typically sharing cabins.

Note: This entire section will need to be "corrected" to match the Delta Dynamics-verse, including the class name and Vulcan involvement (or lack thereof) in the war.

Notes

  • Against my better judgement, I'm aligning the name "D'Kyr" with Timo's use of T'Khut. To be clear, fandom recognizes the combat cruiser—first seen in the Enterprise season two episode "Shockwave, Part II"—as D'Kyr, but in reality, we don't know its actual name. Memory Alpha refers to it as the "D'Kyr-type", because the "D'Kyr" was the name of the first ship seen on-screen. Star Trek Online considers it the D'Kyr class, as does Memory Beta, though the former also has it a default science vessel, rather than combat. Interestingly, the fourth season DVD set of Enterprise identified it as the Command class, which would be "A'Fic" in the Vulcan language. "T'Khut" is the name of Vulcan's sister planet.
  • Fifty (at least) built, and "some thirty regularly shipped Tal’Kyrs on their missions of peace enforcement."[1]
  • "Jester" David Gibson's background write-up above says the "D’Kyr ships were designed to counter Andorian battlecruisers." I like having a class start of 2135, which is seven years before the Andorian Kumari slips the rails. However, I see the D’Kyr class as being an original counter to a preceding Andorian battlecruiser that was easily overshadowed by the Kumari, possibly because of the dominance of the D’Kyr. The Vulcans just did not replace them with a larger combat vessel (or maybe they started to, with the Suurok class).
  • Vulcan—rather than turn over the combat vessels themselves—ordered the T'Khuts dismantled, providing their reactors and weaponry for planned fortifications at the Romulan border.[2]
  • The class never served within the UFP Star Fleet (though their reactors and armament have).
