Banner of the Confederacy of Vulcan

The Tarn Empire is the Tarn state.

History

The Tarn developed rapidly warp capabilities, starting in 2028. Their new warp 3 engines allowed them to sustain the new colony on Ssk’tarra by 2030 and by 2045, they had warp 5, leading to the conquests of Repthan and Drakmoor.

In the early 2150s, as the Tarn Empire’s resource-driven expansion pushed its frontier outposts—particularly mining operations like Extractis Beta—into the fringes of Klingon exploration efforts, minor skirmishes erupted around contested asteroid belts and gas giant systems. Between approximately 2152 and 2154, both sides conducted probing hit-and-run raids without escalating to full-scale war. By late 2154, the Klingon High Council lodged formal protests, and in early 2155 both empires tacitly agreed to withdraw, establishing an informal ceasefire and frontier understanding that endured until the Tarn–Federation War of the 2160s.

Between 2162 and 2164, the Tarn Empire and the United Federation of Planets engaged in an undeclared—but fierce—border conflict sparked by the Tarn’s aggressive push toward early Federation trade routes in the Beta Quadrant. Tarn warships, utilizing their improved Warp-5 drives, raided supply convoys near key jump points, while Federation Star Fleet vessels attempted to defend civilian traffic and protect newly allied worlds. Skirmishes centered around the P'Jem and Vulcanis systems, with neither side willing to risk a full-scale invasion but both determined to assert control over strategic corridors.

By mid 2164, mounting losses and diplomatic pressure forced negotiations in the wake of a devastating engagement at the Shatina Expanse, where a flotilla of Tarn dreadnoughts clashed with Star Fleet cruisers. In late 2164, an armistice was signed that froze territorial claims and established the Tarn Neutral Zone—a buffer region approximately three light-years across—prohibiting any military vessels from either side.

Between 2165 and 2367, the Tarn were almost completely isolated on the galactic stage by the Tarn Neutral Zone, which forbade entry by ships from either side, limited interstellar commerce, and severely curtailed Tarn expansion.

In 2367, long-standing negotiations secured the opening of the neutral zone, but also reopened the issues left unanswered by the original cease-fire.

Despite two centuries of (enforced) isolation, many Tarn still believe that ruling the galaxy is their manifest destiny. While the Tarn Empire is not currently expansionist, their internal politics are unstable at best. For the moment, the Tarn seem content to establish new diplomatic and economic ties—though the official policy may change as quickly as the Ruling Circle's perceived self-interest.

Government

The Tarn government is led by the First Circle (part of the larger Royal Family) and governed by the Council of Circles, which functions as an hereditary parliament or legislature.

Competition within and between these groups is never-ending, and intrigue (economic, political, and personal) are endemic, vicious, and Machiavellian. Government policy is less-often determined by what is wisest or most-productive than by the machinations of the various politicians and circles based upon their own immediate self-interest.

Inhabited Planets

The Tarn Empire is located approximately 30-50 lightyears from Earth, located above the galactic plane by about 45-60 degrees, in a direction that is roughly "northeast" of Vulcan and "southeast" of Andoria. The capital system of Keth'tar and the three closest core worlds are heavily fortified. There are eight fully-colonized worlds and six mining/industrial colonies spread across an area just over 20 lightyears at the maximum extent:

Note: the Torgu-Va system is located in what would become the neutral zone, so neither combatant properly explored it, leaving the survivors from both crashed ships to their own means.
