Kzinti History

From Starfleet Command

The following is compiled from fanon created both for the Star Trek Adventures RPG and by the author of the USS Albion website. The report merges the Latty Niven history of the Man-Kzin wars with that of Trek's in a way that feels mostly unforced. Some changes have been made to downplay Klingon involvement, as the Kzin Empire so very deep into the Alpha quadrant (north and west of the Romulan Star Empire), that it seems incredulous the Klingons could have their own simmering conflict with them. These entries have not been added to the Years articles yet.

Current Status: Not yet included in the SFC canon.

  • 2155: First Contact with the Kzinti race.
  • 2178: Contact with the colony of Weyland is lost. USS Challenger, sent to investigate, engages the Kzinti in defense of the colony. Three Kzinti space craft are destroyed (with minimal damage received); the ship's MACOs enjoy similar success in thwarting the ground assault.
  • 2178: A large Kzinti assault squadron is met by a Star Fleet task force of 7 starships. Following the easy Federation victory, the survivors are interrogated and the task force proceeds on to the nearest Kzinti colony, M'rrst. A peace settlement is imposed by the task force commander.
  • 2204: The Kzinti attempt to execute long-planned strikes against Federation listening posts and civilian shipping. Star Fleet responds with even more capable assets than previously. The Federation seizes some advance Kzinti colony worlds from which the attacks had launched and establishes a clearly defined & strengthened border between the two states.
  • 2238: USS Sun Tzu, on patrol and conducting routine sensor scans in the region, is surprised and destroyed by a Kzinti border patrol ship. The ship's emergency beacon is also destroyed, removing any immediate forewarning of increased hostilities.
  • 2238: The Kzinti Empire launches a coordinated assault along their entire border, destroying all sensor and observation posts first. The colonies of Wayland, We Made It, Gamma Hydra, and Eridani Indi fall quickly, but not before Star Fleet receives distress calls.
  • 2238: Early reports indicating the Kzinti forces are now in parity, Star Fleet organizes hit and run raids on enemy shipping and supply posts, weakening the Kzinti offensive. After defeating the main aggressor force, Star Fleet strips Kzinti core worlds of shipyards and planetary defenses. The latest conditions placed on the empire limit their access to advanced weaponry and propulsion technology. Unscheduled inspections are also ordered.
  • 2270s The Kzinti Patriarch dispatches "privateers" to probe Federation weapons, tactics, and strengths. They learn about the Klingons, who also come to know about them. The Ferengi are used as intermediaries for the illegal technology the Klingons provide them. The Patriarch orders new construction to take place on the opposite side of the empire from the Federation, including colonies outside their border and with construction yards of independent states not yet alienated to the Kzinti.
  • 2281: In response to increasingly violent attacks, the Federation launches a retaliatory offensive with a large number of vessels. Surprised by the inventory of advanced starships in the Kzinti forces, Star Fleet suffers significant losses while also doing considerable damage to the Kzinti shipbuilding capacity both within and without the empire.
  • 2282: After Star Fleet withdraws, the Federation establishes a newly-regimented border surrounding the acknowledged limits of the empire and establishes a powerful presence presence to secure it, in a policy of encirclement and containment.
  • 2290: The Kzinti send diplomats to meet with Federation representatives on Starbase 25.
