A somewhat belated response to the challenges of field repairs was given in 2263 when the first Cle Dan fast repair tenders were fielded. Capable of reaching the operating areas of even the latest deep-ranging exploration vessels and combatants, these nimble little vessels combined the propulsion machinery of an Ohio tug with a versatile hull equipped with a complete forward salvage and repair suite of tools and facilities.
At a cruise speed of warp five, the Cle Dan could travel with tactical formations and supply convoys alike. A potent impulse system allowed the towing of massive pieces of hardware, including entire starship nacelles, across short distances. Two heavy cranes were fitted laterally amidships, and could reach into twin dorsal bays for spare parts, grab battlefield jetsam or burned-out components from port and starboard alike, or clamp onto an item to be towed above the hull. The bays also provided stowage for an assortment of finer tools, mountable on the four work pods carried. Forward of the bay area were workshops and holds for the most essential types of field repair. At the very bow, habitation was provided for the two dozen crew, along with a combined navigation and repair operations command center whose vast overhead viewports gave direct visual access to the starships in need of assistance.

The Cle Dan tenders frequently operated farther forward than other Fleet repair assets, but lacked the endurance and range of large tugs of Ptolemy descent, or the volume and complexity of workshops and spares holds on Abbott repair ships. They were at their best when able to operate alongside these more potent vessels, which were lamentably few in number. It would be typical for a 2260s or 2270s task force to be assigned at least one Cle Dan operationally, but other tender assets would usually only deploy when needed.
As soon as LN-61 engines became available, Star Fleet started allocating them to the Cle Dan force, eventually converting half of the original 44 units to this faster and more maneuverable standard. Additional sensors were also installed at the bow, resulting in a slight increase in total length along with a more than tripled capacity for sorting out a complex debris field, a typical scene of operations for a frontline tender. Other mission gear naturally underwent constant upgrading as well, yet the vessels themselves retained their original systems and utilities until the 2298 retirement and replacement with more capable Grin'ki units.
There are few historical entries or footnotes on the exploits of this as such far-ranging and adventurous type of support vessel. Best remembered is perhaps USS Lakani, captured intact by the Romulans while supporting Operation Grey Ghost in Rihannsu space.
