The Arcturians are an early contact species of Earth. Their most outstanding feature is their physical form, while socially they are a culture in flux: a strongly militaristic society, they are adopting and adapting entertainment and fashion from a specific period and place of Earth, becoming a cultural mecca for the performing arts and style trends.

Appearance

The Arcturans have translucent, chalk-white, or reddish-gray skin, which forms heavy folds on their heads. They have large earlobes and small amounts of platinum hair. Arcturan native dress include a leather-and-fur tunic while contemporary styles are direct variations of Earth's Elizabethan England. They have a fairly resistant immune system and can easily survive a few days without food and water. As a rule they suffer from very few diseases and tend to recover rapidly from most injuries. It is believed that this was the intention of their early cloning experiments. They tend to be able to withstand high levels of pain, adverse conditions and dangerous situations with very little stress.

Social

As a culture, the Arcturians appear initially to be contemptuous of other species, though they often do form friendly and sincere relationships on an individual basis. They developed in vitro fertilization techniques that border on—but do not cross the line with—genetic manipulation. This centuries-old tradition began with the intent to strengthen their species' immune system from an ecology rife with disease vectors (natural and artificial) and became the norm. As such, they frown on typical sexual reproduction. The in vitro fertilization technology has an emphasis on incubation chambers, with a large percentage of the population being birthed without the normal gestation within the females of the species.

They are far more militaristic than even Andorians or Humans. The constant demand for troops in the industrial period's overlapping states of war between nation-states led to rapid incubation of a cultural subset referred to as the "Warborn", which served as troops within 16 months of incubation, using pharmaceuticals and hormone boosters to induce parthenogenetic breeding. Once the planet united, these troops stood ready to defend Upra. After joining the Federation in 2192, these plans were adapted to serve the UFP in times of crisis. While Arcturians have always served in Star Fleet (and the SFMC), the closest the Warborn came to actual combat was when open conflict with the Klingons erupted. A large "batch" of Arcturian warriors were created; most were (voluntarily) placed into stasis.
