Overview

The Star Fleet Marine Corps (SFMC) is a direct descendant of the United Earth's Military Assault Commandos (MACO), as well as the naval infantry of the other UFP founding members that participated in the Romulan War. Upon the UFP Star Fleet's founding, the Star Fleet Ground Attack Marines (SFGAM) was consolidated from available ground forces into several expeditionary forces, each led by a lieutenant general. In 2208, during Star Fleet's re-organization, the SFGAM was re-named the Star Fleet Marine Corps and expanded into an organization that fielded planetary forces alongside the existing expeditionary forces.

The expeditionary forces are deployed into major combat areas of operation (CAO) and are comprised of the number of divisions determined to be appropriate for that combat area. Star Fleet Support Operations maintains transports to deliver Marines to the CAO and assault ships to the vicinity of the battlefield; Aerospace Operations provides ship-to-surface transport via the assault crafts employed in its Mobility Wings.

The planetary forces are referred to as (Star Fleet) Regulars. Though they are a part of the Marine Corps, they are not trained in the smaller operations for which the expeditionary forces are famously known, such as first stage invasions & expeditionary security. Instead, these heavier infantry and armor units arrive via a secured beachhead (post-invasion) to engage the remaining opposing forces with more capable and endurable weapon systems. In other states, they would be recognizable as soldiers in an army; however, in Star Fleet they fall under the SFMC chain of command and bring a more varied range of weapons to the battlefield.

The SFMC also has a special operations force, called Rapid Reaction Teams (RRT), each comprised of 12 Marines. These will usually be deployed on sector command ships, in order to be quickly available for small-scale incidents (usually ship boardings, but also any incidents where the time, availability or situation does not require MeSON response). Additionally, Star Fleet will sometimes set aside ships-of-the-line (such as frigates, destroyers and light cruisers) dedicated to providing full and rapid support to a Rapid Reaction Company, to provide a quick response solution.

In 2245, following the Four Years' War, the SFMC re-organized into a more fluid force.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps is the only Marine with the rank of General, while the Deputy Commandant holds the rank of Lieutenant General.

Note: The Commandant of Star Fleet Marine Corps is a PC and handles all aspects of the SFMC in-game. This includes working with the Chiefs of Star Fleet and Support Operations (and their subordinates) to get his Marines on-board deploying ships, to forward-staged areas or to the combat zone.

The Deputy Commandant of Star Fleet Marine Corps is a named NPC.

Organizational Descriptions

The Fleet Liaison is a Star Fleet officer with responsibilities to work with the SFMC Chief of Staff in coordination efforts between the Marine Corps and Fleet forces.
The Marine Reserve Commanding General (a lieutenant general) is responsible to the Commandant and Chief of Staff for all matters concerning the Marine Corps Reserve.
The Marine Corps Research and Development Commanding General (a major general) is responsible for the creation and modernization of weapons, equipment, and starships. The command works closely with the Star Fleet Corps of Engineers (SCE) and the Star Fleet Division of Applied Sciences.
The Personnel Command's director (a brigadier general) is responsible to the Chief of Staff for both personnel and training matters.
