Historical Events

  • By: Just six vessels of the Ariadne patrol corvette class are still in commissioned service, though only serving in prestige roles.[1]
  • By: The Defender class still possesses the highest firepower, weapons range, and endurance of any Star Fleet vessel in operation, easily surpassing even the modern Excelsior variants.[2]
  • Praxis, the moon of Qo'noS and the site of the planet's key energy production facility, explodes from over-mining and insufficient safety precautions. The explosion causes a powerful subspace shock wave and deadly pollution of Qo'noS' ozone, threatening the depletion of the oxygen in that planet's atmosphere within approximately fifty years.[3][4]
  • Unable to solve the cataclysmic problem of oxygen depletion of Qo'noS with their own resources, the Klingon's Chancellor Gorkon sues for peace with the Federation. A faction of military renegades engineer Gorkon's assassination on the eve of his meeting with the Federation to ensure war, but their plot is exposed.[5][4]
  • The Khitomer Conference, the first full peace negotiations between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire, is held at Camp Khitomer, a Klingon colony on the planet Khitomer near the border with the Federation. It is preceded by an assassination attempt by a limited number of high-ranking Star Fleet officers against the Federation president, Ra-ghoratreii.[7]
  • Immediately after assassination attempt: USS Aveley (NCC-2543, Impervious subclass strike cruiser), USS Iron Sentry (NCC-5509), and USS Masterton (NCC-5506, both Larson class destroyers) are intercepted fifty minutes after the assassination attempt on President Ra-ghoratreii by USS Canopus (NCC-1814, Tikopai subclass heavy cruiser) and USS Hornet (NCC-1714, Constitution class heavy cruiser). After a brief exchange of fire, Aveley was dead in space; she self-destructed shortly thereafter. The two Larsons capitulated and returned to Federation space.[8]
  • Immediately after assassination attempt: Two additional illegal strikes against the Klingon Empire are prevented when the executive officers on each task force's leading cruiser assumes command of their vessels from the captains.[8]
  • Immediately after assassination attempt: USS Minsk (NCC-2525, Ascension class dreadnought) is prevented from proceeding with the illegal attack on the Klingon Empire through sabotage conducted by her engineering crew.[8]
They are later decorated for their actions.
  • Shortly after assassination attempt: USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A, Constitution class) is decommissioned.[9]
  • Shortly after assassination attempt: Star Fleet deactivates 14 Belknap and 8 Impervious strike cruisers, along with most of the surviving destroyers and dreadnoughts and other offensive-mission starships.[8]
Twelve of those Belknaps and all Ascensions are decommissioned and scrapped, while two deactivated Belknaps and all eight Imperviouses are returned to service with the others of their overall class.
  • Some Okinawa class light frigates decommissioned from this post-Khitomer point on are donated to use by UFP research organizations.[11]
  • Following an investigation by Star Fleet that uncovers prostitution, illegal animal trading, and child slavery as endemic to the culture and government of Beta Rigel IV and V, both planets are immediately suspended from the Federation.[12]
  • The Federation negotiates with the Alonis regarding the establishment of a starbase in their system.[15]
  • The ex-Matterhorn, of the former Hellespont escort class, shepherds the first post-Khitomer Federation merchant convoy into Klingon space.[16]
Clearly, this takes place after the signing of the accords.
  • The AIG sets aside their Lenthal class destroyers immediately following the Klingon conflict.[17]
  • USS Darwin (NCC-652, Darwin subclass light science scout) undergoes a conversion to a lightly-armed variant of the Oberth type, is re-designated as a Gagarin subclass tactical scout, and re-commissioned as USS Thagard.[18][19]
As USS Darwin, the ship was a subclass lead. However, the remainder of its (original) subclass do not follow it into conversion.
  • USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B, Excelsior class) is commissioned.[20]
  • In a compromise, the Archanis system is turned over to the Klingons in return for the Klingons ceding all other rights to the Archanis sector.[21]
  • The final Richtofen class clipper is decommissioned.[22]
  • The final Constitution Flight IV cruiser is decommissioned.[24]
  • Post-Khitomer: The Leonardo class begins phased transfers to inactive reserves—oldest to newest—with only a few dozen remaining operational.[25]
  • Post-Khitomer: The Flight IV to Flight V conversions for the Brenton class are halted, with USS Gance allowed to complete the process; USS Ford and USS Morrow are decommissioned immediately following the signing of the Khitomer Accords.[26]
The three newbuilds had completed the conversion prior to the accords.
  • Post-Khitomer: USS Alliance (NCC-1849, Enterprise Flight II heavy cruiser) assumes the Federation flagship role upon the decommissioning of USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A).[24]
