Species Physiology
The Grazerite race consists of several interrelated subspecies, with some featuring appearances ranging from goat-like to gazelle-like to wildebeest-like. Grazerites are accustomed to primarily vegetarian diets, having evolved from herbivores. They typically have a deeply set brow and thicker skulls which support curving horns. Most have very short body hair (various ranges of tan, white, browns, and reds, and sometimes piebald) and thickly padded hands. Grazerites require substantially less sleep compared to Humans.
Culture
On their homeworld of Grazer, Grazerites congregate in upsols—units of 100 to 500 individuals who live and work together. These often consist of extended families, though mixed upsols also exist. Grazerite naming conventions use a familiar name first, hyphenated with the name of the individual’s upsol. Childrearing is shared among members of the upsol, though children remain primarily in the care of their parents. Upon the birth of their first child, Grazerite parents gain voting rights and full citizenship, registered through their upsol. This event is celebrated as the rite of “first-birth.”
Although technologically advanced and valued members of the United Federation of Planets—contributing notable statesmanship as well as service in Star Fleet—the arts of Grazer are not widely considered as challenging or valuable as those of other worlds. It is supposed that, lacking conflict, their art became complacent. However, by the early twenty-fifth century, a new movement of Grazerite art began to emerge, challenging those older traditions.
Grazerite debate is not typically a contest of wills but a process aimed at consensus. Participants generally respond in turn, offering agreement with small additions to the given thought, and are as willing to listen as to speak. On average, Grazerites are careful and methodical, with a natural patience that suits them to deep reflection and tedious tasks. They are often optimistic, rarely discouraged, and inclined to move from one hopeful ideal to the next.
A respected Grazerite educational institution is the Outworld Cooperation Symposia, a system of universities that trains scientists, astronauts, engineers, and diplomats.
One of the rites of Grazerite death is called Semtir. In this practice, the remains of the dead are destroyed before friends and loved ones, after which memories of the deceased are shared.
History
Grazerites hail from the Federation member world of Grazer, which joined the United Federation of Planets in the 2305. The planet is renowned for its peaceful culture and long-standing tradition of agriculture. Technological development on Grazer began with agricultural advancements and eventually expanded into other sciences, ultimately leading to the achievement of space travel and warp capability. In the modern era, Grazer is regarded as an exceptionally peaceful society.
Historical records note that early Grazerite civilization was not free of conflict. In Grazer’s prehistoric period, the species lived as prey within an ecosystem populated by numerous predators. As intelligence and tool-making advanced, Grazerite societies began hunting and eliminating these predators in the interest of survival. Once their security was assured, their civilization flourished, and future generations rejected violence as a societal norm.
By the 2370s, it became fashionable for Grazerites to emphasize their commitment to peace by wearing a cloth covering over their horns. This tradition was notably demonstrated by Federation President Jaresh-Inyo, who wore the horn covering during his term in office from 2369 through 2372.
