The Romulans are a humanoid race from the planet Romulus. The Romulans are biological cousins of Vulcans, descended from those who rejected Surak's reforms during the Time of Awakening. By the 24th century, the Romulan Star Empire was one of the major powers in the galaxy. After a supernova destroyed the Romulan sun, the Romulan Free State became the official government.

Appearance

Due to their shared ancestry, Vulcans and Romulans possess very similar physiology. In addition, much like being an offshoot from their Vulcan cousins themselves, a race known as the Debrune were an ancient offshoot of the Romulans.

Romulans have pointed ears, eyebrows that are arched and up-swept, varied skin color, and copper-based blood that appears green when oxygenated in the arteries, or copper or rust-colored when deoxygenated in the veins.

Some Romulans have two brow ridges above the bridge of their nose, forming a V-shape on the forehead, while other Romulans lack these ridges, making them outwardly indistinguishable from Vulcans. Ridges are a trait associated with Northerners.

The Romulan heart is gray in color.

Despite their common ancestry, there are also many subtle internal physiological differences between Vulcans and Romulans. Their life signs register distinctly enough on starship scanners in 2268 that they are distinguishable, despite some difficulty in that task.[1]
