• The dilithium foci of the USS Prospect (Triton cruiser) shatters, killing Commodore Arkadi Lunov, the last surviving cruiser commander of the legendary ‘escape velocity’ era.

• The United Federation of Planets extends membership to Aurelia II.

• December 23: A star near the border of Klingon space suddenly goes supernova, destroying the single planet in orbit there, and leading to the formation of the Azure Nebula.

This is the homeworld of the Caeliar, and the initiation of the events that lead to the creation of the Borg.
