Exploration Command
Summary
In 2161, the new Star Fleet was organized around the specialization and available assets of its founding members. As Earth's relatively rapid exploration and colonization efforts were largely the reason for the formation of the United Federation of Planets, it was decided it would devote its space assets to developing the role of exploration. In order to separate the new multinational force from the similarly named United Earth Starfleet and because the mission role was an extension of its own, United Earth Space Probe Agency became the lead agency for the new Star Fleet Exploration Command and its assets formed the bulk of its efforts.
The remaining combat assets were assigned to defend Earth and its affiliated colonies under the name Earth Fleet. The senior officer of the UE Starfleet, Admiral Samuel Gardner, was assigned as Chief of Staff for Exploration and served as one of the initial five Joint Chiefs of Staff. His UE Starfleet deputy took command of Earth Fleet.
The Chief of Staff for Exploration is a PC and directly communicates with the commanding officers of the ships assigned to Exploration Command. The Deputy Chief of Staff for Exploration is a named NPC. In 2208, upon Star Fleet's re-organization, the positions are reconstituted with new roles and titles.
