Central African States

The Central African States (CAS) saw its start in the huge collaborative effort conducted by most of the nations on Earth, in order to prevent the 2031 impact of 17 cataclysmic-sized asteroids from hitting the planet. As part of the dramatic, multi-nation effort, the African continent was provided a substantial amount of economic and structural support by eastern and western nations. Large swaths of north, central and south Africa were turned into agricultural centers to better feed the world (in case any of the asteroids failed to divert) and central Africa itself saw a number of launch platforms erected to support the numerous scheduled orbital operations.

Not only was the planet's efforts an unqualified success, but the results of the collaboration paid generous benefits to most nations, most notably those in central Africa. In many cases, instead of abandoning or dismantling the spaceports built in the region, the Western Alliance and the new Eastern Coalition either provided the subject-matter experts for the Africans to continue using them or provided the necessary education to African citizens to allow them to operate the sites themselves. Born into this period of assistance, with no obvious attempts to exploit them, the nations of Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, and São Tomé & Príncipe organized their various assets (infrastructure, technology and education centers, and personnel) into the CAS, as the first modern all-African space-faring organization in 2035. The peaceful inception similarly developed into a peaceful space presence: the CAS developed no defense-minded vessels and instead focused first on asteroid mining craft and, later, deuterium siphoning equipment, upon the discovery of warp technology.

The Central African States had another influential role in Earth's early modern history: having witnessed the immensely constructive efforts of the UEDP's coordination of planetary assets and capabilities to solve poverty and suffering in those regions most stricken by the Post-Atomic Horror and, recalling the great accomplishments of the New United Nations in the pre-Swarm years between 2026 and 2031, the CAS proclaimed the Earth was now ready to face the interstellar neighborhood as one species. The CAS suggested a world government based on democracy and the advancement of all humanity and called for a world council to convene in rebuilt Paris to establish such a government. The UEDP was very accommodating in making sure such a proposal moved forward and a gathering of the Eastern Coalition, the newly re-united United States of America, the newly formed African Confederation, and the leadership of the UEDP drafted the Traité d'Unification in Paris in 2130. The African Confederation was invited to be the first signatory to the "birth certificate" of the new United Earth.
