Canonicity

From Starfleet Command

For the purposes of this strategic simulation, Starfleet Command (also SFC) primarily bases its canonicity on Timo Saloniemi's Starfleet history, titled by myself as UFP Starfleet and It's History.

A close second to this work is the adapted rules for starship construction, originally written by Steven Long for Last Unicorn Game's Star Trek RPG. After that, the standard canoncity, as established by Paramount for its broadcast and film products, is adapted as suitable, along with various other works of differing levels of canonictiy, to include fandom products (with a notable exception for a majority of the 'history' presented in Star Trek: Enterprise). The primary concern is that these additional sources enhance the 'universe' established by Saloniemi. Additions to the SFC universe timeline should be delayed until after UFP History has been uploaded and absorbed into a coherent timeline for SFC.

For the intention of developing ships and other units within the framework of SFC, the construction rules are generally bent to match Saloniemi's history. However, due to the breadth and complexity of both works, aspects of both may be bent to accommodate the overall 'universe' in play here. As such, notes will be made within the articles to indicate breaks from the sources and major changes, especially in matters that merit consistency (such as technology), shall be indicated here.

Levels of Canonicity

  1. UFP Starfleet and It's History, by Timo Saloniemi
  2. Spacedock, by Steven Long, as adapted and presented here
  3. all other works

Breaks from Canonicity

  • Warp Technology: right now, the dates and costs of the warp nacelles provided in the Spacedock rules are so complicated, that adapting them to the UFP History appears problematic. Because exact warp figures appear to not be as important in UFP History as they are to the Star Trek: Enterprise series, and the method of distances between systems is still being designed, as ships are built in the SFC game, they will receive the appropriate warp nacelles, as they are presented in the construction rules. When the ships are designed per the rules, they will receive nacelles that fit the character of the ship presented in UFP History (i.e., as physically manifested), but matching the characteristics of the nacelle technology.
  • Remaining Technology: not yet having tried to build ships by the timeline presented in UFP History, the intention remains, with the exception of warp technology, to change the construction rules where necessary to meet the adopted timeline. For example, the construction rules will be changed to reflect the discovery of transporter technology about 2151 (per UFP History), rather than the currently stated date of 2186. If a certain portion of technology demonstrates a haphazard result to this, then it will either be handled as is done with warp nacelles or thru some other method. However, at this time, the construction rules timeline will be adapted to that of SFC's version.

Notes about UFP History

The intention of the effort to load the UFP History to this site is to provide an unedited electronic version of the book in a manner well suited to wiki-searches. As such, an editing of that material is to be so minimal as to be considered rare. Small edits to be allowed include correcting mis-spellings or poor grammar (if they exist), but any factual changes may only be made due to conflicting information within the overall span of the book (and must be documented via a note within the article, rather than the discussion tab). There is NO intention to make UFP History fit SFC canon. Quite the opposite: after UFP History is fully loaded, the SFC versions of Saloniemi's expansive efforts will be represented in the State of the Fleet and Starfleet Intelligence Data Files articles.

Additionally, UFP History is a source for the SFC game. Names and quantities of the presented ships will not match those of the SFC game, but the fiction will prove a resource for the game.
