5.14 Fire Suppression System

Cost: 1 x Size
Power Requirement: 1 Power per round of use

Although many of the substances used to construct furnishings, systems and other objects carried aboard starships meet specific standards on inflammability, fires can still break out due to damage caused by enemy attacks or similar events. When that occurs, the fire suppression system activates to snuff the flames. The environmental monitoring sensors located throughout a ship include fire detection sensors. When they detect a fire, Operations and Security are notified by computer.

On ships built prior to 2305, if the fire is a small one, chemical sprays and foams are released from various outlets. If the fire is too large to be suppressed simply by the automatic systems, or in a remote place, crewmembers directed to fight the fire will use small hand-held fire extinguishers that are attached to the walls of corridors and common areas with brackets. If the fire is out of control, affected sections can be mechanically isolated and vented to space, which will extinguish most any flame nearly immediately.

On ships built after 2304, force fields began to be installed to replace chemical suppression. Small fires can be dealt with by small, localized forefields directed at the immediate area. Larger fields can be used to seal off larger areas, with mechanical isolation and venting to space as the final option to extinguish a conflagration.

A fire suppression system occupies 1 x Size in SUs and costs 1 Power to operate in any size area. It has a strength rating of 10; this cannot be improved with extra Power. The Narrator rates fires with Strengths of their own to determine how effectively the suppression system extinguishes them.

SFC Technology Index

Fire Suppression System technology is contracted out to various manufacturers by the shipwrights and is not standardized by generation nor ship size. Instead, fire suppression modules are swapped out and replaced as necessary, without having to upgrade and replace an entire system. As such, Fire Suppression Systems have no index.
