Guide:Curiosity
Background: Continuing Mission
- Written by Chris Sham on his personal blog [1], with a document entitled "Maps & Legends".
Overview: Designed specifically for use in the Dominion War, the first of the Curiosity class launched too late to make any difference to that conflict. Instead, it had to be adapted in the post-war years to serve as a more conventional Star Fleet starship, taking over the peacetime duties of the many older Excelsior-and Miranda-class ships destroyed by the Dominion. A robust design, equipped with some of the top of the range facilities of its day, the Curiosity class continued the Star Fleet tradition established by predecessors like the Constitution and Excelsior classes.
Capabilities: Formally categorized as a heavy cruiser, the Curiosity class design was built to reflect lessons learned in the early 2370s from supposed failings of the Galaxy and Intrepid classes and the apparent success of the newer Sovereign class. The result is a tough, technically-advanced vessel built for speed. Although it could have been better equipped for scientific operations, the Curiosity’s speed and endurance, along with generally-sound systems, make it a perfectly serviceable exploration starship. While only a relative few Curiosity-class vessels were produced, they functioned well, and none ever, ever went mysteriously missing at all.
