This 2264 test cruise catches USS Charles K. Smith in her final shuttlecarrier guise, optimized for commando missions with an estimated reinforced company of Marines, half a dozen assault shuttles and the same number of tactical craft. Additional space doors cut into the expanded hangar reduced the structural integrity of the vessel, yet not so drastically that she could not return to survey duty afterwards. The malleable interiors of the Byrd type facilitated a rather painless back-and-forth refit, and ultimately allowed the Smith to ship a high number of special environment craft for her final voyage of exploration.
