Romulan War Era (2131-2160)

"Diplomacy? With the Romulans? As far as I'm concerned, the only language they'll ever understand is a torpedo up their ass."

Enemy tactics during the Earth-Romulan War were nothing short of ruthless. Coordinated assaults from Bird of Preys were commonplace and Earth's capital ships could barely hold their own. Indeed, Starfleet was not a military organization and mulitifaceted starships like the NX Class would be outclassed in these lopsided engagements. Human engineers were forced back to the drawing board and previously controversial designs were given a second appraisal to even the odds.

Dominion War Era (2371-2375)

The horrific loss of the USS Odyssey against the Jem'Hadar dealt a massive blow to Starfleet’s confidence in the Galaxy class. Despite the clear advantage in size and firepower, the lumbering giant found herself struggling against the diminutive attack fighters. It provided insight into several Galaxy class design faults, exposing the clear weakness of her neck section and poorly armored engines. Captain Keogh’s outdated battle tactics were also partly to blame.
As a result, battle scenarios were altered to play to the design’s strengths. New tactics were introduced that emphasized speed and coordinated weapons fire. Maneuverability was essential in engaging Jem’Hadar attack fighters, as current Starfleet shields were rendered ineffective against their phased polaron weaponry. This situation would be further rectified with incremental enhancements of Starfleet phasers during the course of the Dominion War. By late 2373, the tide had turned in favor of the Galaxy class, with the class leader herself taking on the highest number of kills against the fighters.
