Symbol of the United Earth Defense Pact

The United Earth Defense Pact was formed from the decision by the New United Nations (NUN), in 2069, to put the "Earth's ascendancy and safety ahead of national goals", one of the few strong acts of governance to come out of the second iteration of that body. As a related creation of the Sparon-DeSoto treaty, the UEDP was seen to be the authority behind the administration and control of Earth's various armed forces. Upon the failure of the NUN to re-convene in 2079, the UEDP became a de facto world government, pulled along by the force of personalities that made up it's international body of leaders. By playing partisan when reporting to their individual national governments, these senior executives and military officers were able to convince their superiors that their nation had more influence over the Pact than others, often getting concessions provided and support as needed to meet their goals: not only were they charged with the defense of the planet, but they saw themselves as the right tools to help the planet recover, along with the Vulcans' help.

Until they were 'relieved' by the formation of the United Earth government in 2130, they were the official face to all interplanetary visitors, and the Earth is fortunate there was no ulterior motives to develop during their unsupervised tenure.

Mission Statement

The United Earth Defense Pact (UEDP) is tasked with six missions: the military defense of the Sol system, interplanetary law enforcement, orbital security, search and rescue, navigational assistance and customs enforcement.

Agencies

  • United Earth Defense Force (UEDF): In the latter part of the 2070s, this organization stood up as member nations disarmed their own national militias, in accordance with the Sparon-DeSoto treaty. The Defense Force consisted of a hodge-podge of infantry, military police, armor and associated support units, primarily as a means to protect Earth's citizens and infrastructure from internal unrest, but by intent to protect the planet from alien threats. In 2088, the special forces unit Military Assault Command Operations (also known as MACO) was formed.[1]
In the Guide article Liberty, it is stated that national militias began to disarm in the latter portion of the 2070s, per the Sparon-DeSoto treaty. As a United Earth Space Fleet was created to fill a role, it seemed natural that a similar organization would form from the remnants of those militias.
  • United Earth Space Probe Agency (2067-23rd c.): Formed from the ISA, coordinated, administered and conducted exploration and scientific research in space; the UEDP took control after the collapse of the NUN.
The existence of a United Earth Stellar Navy is not supported by any source (though the United Earth Space Central is), but stands to reason when confronted with the need for such an organization under the contested United Earth Defense Pact umbrella.
