Andorians are the native humanoid species of the moon Andoria (sometimes also mistakenly referred to as Andor, its parent planet). They are typically citizens of the Andorian Empire, which is a founding member state of the United Federation of Planets.

Appearance

A blue-skinned species, Andorians had a higher metabolism than humans. Because of Andorians’ unusual physiology, intravenous injections are not possible; instead, a doctor is required to use intra-muscular injections. Andorian antennae are used, at least in part, for balance. An Andorian is partially disabled and unable to function immediately following the loss of an antenna, but is typically able to compensate after a day or two. Antennae can take up to nine months to regrow, although that can be completed in half the time with electrical stimulation and cranial massage therapy. Loss of antennae is a humiliating experience for an Andorian. The movement of an Andorian’s antennae can also indicate emotional states; an Andorian could sometimes point their antennae at a potential mate to signify attraction, though it is unclear if this was a voluntary or involuntary response.[1]

Notes

  • At some point between the Andorians achieving warp capability and founding the UFP (2161), the Arkenites became their subjects. While relatively aggressive (in comparison to Humans), the former doesn't require the Andorians to "capture" worlds from other species. The events surrounding the disaster on the Azha-R7a mining colony in 2259, wherein the Arkenites briefly "joined" the Klingon Empire, suggest the Arkenites—as a culture—may readily trade their sovereignty for assistance. There may be a similar story in regards to their relationship with the Andorian Empire, especially since they were freed from subjectivity prior to the UFP's founding.
