Starbase Operations

From Starfleet Command
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Starbase Operations operates and administrates Star Fleet's orbital and deep-space space stations (known colloquially as 'starbases', even if not titled as such). (Starbases located on planets are controlled by the Corps of Engineers' Division of Facilities.) As space stations serve different functions, it was decided to divide the Department of Starbases into divisions charged with operating certain missions areas (much as starships are categorized into mission classes). Those stations that are not easily designated to only one support mission may be instead directed by the division that fits the most primary mission.

The commander of Starbase Operations is a Rear Admiral.

See the Starbases section for more precise mission descriptions.

  • Division of Coalition Base Support: Coalition Bases are space stations either owned or co-controlled with a foreign entity. While these stations may run the gamut of functions, their unique overlap with the diplomatic mission requires a more concerted effort to ensure efficient and cooperative operations. Thus, the commanding officer of the Division of Coalition Base Support (a Rear Admiral) is generally one with a good track record of interactions with non-Federation cultures.
  • Division of Command Base Support: Bases deemed to be command centers are also usually formally numbered as starbases (Starbase 23) and are the contingency sites for Star Fleet Headquarters. As they are also the seats of power for many Star Fleet flag officers, the base commander is usually one of these officers (with his captain-ranked executive officer performing most of the day-to-day tasks of running the site). The Division of Command Base Support only oversees those starbases that are off-planet, so not every locus of Star Fleet leadership falls under this division's auspices. The commanding officer of the division is a Rear Admiral.
  • Division of Engineering Base Support: Service hubs are overseen by this division, minus those stations that are devoted only to starship construction. Service hubs can be stations devoted to Star Fleet morale (often found in sectors without sufficient recreational opportunities), stations that provide spares and minor repair facilities, and stations providing preventative and supportive maintenance (such as baryon sweeps). The commanding officer of the division is a Rear Admiral.
  • Division of Research Base Support: Star Fleet operates many a facility devoted to the long-term study of an anomaly, where a starship would not be appropriate to keep on station. Additionally, many non-Star Fleet organizations also study specific events and phenomenon and can only do so via Star Fleet's sponsorship. This division provides the necessary support to these (often) remote locations. The commanding officer of the division is a Rear Admiral.
  • Division of Strategic Base Support: Star Fleet understands the need to provide combat support to units located along likely combat borders. The strategic base is a rear area fleet concentration area for the purposes of quickly re-stocking and providing most repairs. During times of hostilities, transient reinforcement personnel will be funneled here, to fill the vessels' personnel needs, and medical casualties (and mortal remains) will be transferred here, for transport back to the core worlds. Repair facilities (from simple to extensive) are often located here, alongside (or even within) the station and some preventative maintenance facilities (such as baryon sweepers) are co-located (and under this division's aegis). Intelligence, medical, repair and supply representatives will be located here and expertise on hull, propulsion and tactical repairs will also be on hand. Supplies will be similarly focused, with an emphasis on torpedoes, medical and fighter-craft. The commanding officer of the division is a Rear Admiral.
    • Branch of Tactical Base Support: Tactical bases (or Tac-bases) are highly classified stations intended to relieve starships otherwise cut off from re-supply. Each station's location is secret, even from the facility's personnel, and transport to and from them are done via tightly controlled, semi-automated, computer-randomized spline routes. Most starships will have no need to ever visit such a station, except in time of crisis. The stations themselves are very spartan, providing only the most minimal of repair capabilities and absolutely no visitor quartering. Instead, the stations are intended to provide the war materials necessary to keep the starship combat ready, when access to known resupply depots is not available. Their presence -though suspected- are also classified and this 'division' is hidden within the organization built around strategic bases. The commanding officer of the division is a Rear Admiral and reports thru the Strategic Division commander to the Starbase Operations commander.
  • Division of Supply Base Support: Supply bases do exactly as their categorization suggests: they serve as dedicated depots for the primary efforts of their respective sectors. Some are dedicated to providing colonial support, as well as refuge in times of crisis, while some are dedicated to supporting nearby Fleet operations, operating as the final waypoints for starships and the tenders that support them. The commanding officer of the division is a Rear Admiral.

All of the Rear Admirals in Starbase Operations, both the commanding officer of the office and each of the division (and branch) commanders, are named NPCs.
