Category:Active Carrier Classes
This category lists the currently active carrier classes.
Guide Definition
- Carrier
- A starship intended to support small craft operations, also known as shuttlecarrier. Widely utilized in Romulan war and the early 23rd century; built in low numbers during the military buildup in the late 23rd century; largely replaced by multi-mission ships with capacious shuttlebays in the 24th century. Generally of low warp performance, but carrying heavy defensive armament. Classes include Titan, Valkyr, Ariel and Fredristad.
- Ore carrier or cargo carrier. A large, usually impulse-powered drone for moving significant amounts of ore or cargo inexpensively between star systems. Seldom built as definite ship classes – instead, unique configurations of cargo pods are used for each mission. Largest ships are kilometers in length. Seldom armed or permanently manned, but capable of carrying passengers in special pods or habitat compartments.
Game Definition
As defined above in the Guide definition, the carriers were starships dedicated to the primary mission of shuttlecraft operations and support and were built to excel at just this mission. Never coming in any one style, they could be built as cruisers, transports or any other larger type of vessel. In peacetime, their role was limited, usually seen only in fleet exercises or emergency operations, such as with planetary disasters or interstellar recovery efforts. In wartime, they were critical parts of larger fleet actions, rarely allowed to operate independently. By the 24th century, larger shuttlebays and a tendency to shy away from larger interceptor engagements saw a close to the carrier era. Generally, carriers saw more phaser-based tactical systems, though torpedoes were not unheard of. In the game, any ship -regardless of parent type (ex: throughdeck cruiser)- with a primary mission operating and supporting smaller craft will be categorized as a carrier.
- Role: limited to fleet or disaster operations
- Size: varied, as long as primary purpose was the launching of smaller craft
- Weapons: light-to-standard phaser use, none-to-light torpedo use
