5.12 Recreation Facilities

(Required)
Cost: Varies (see table)
Power Requirement: 2 Power per rating per round of use

It’s easy for crewmembers to become bored or distracted during long starship voyages. To help keep crews mentally and physically alert and active, starships have recreation facilities. These can range from gymnasiums to restaurants and lounges to holodecks.

Every starship has a Recreation Rating, from 1 (barely a galley and exercise room) to 10 (most lavish facilities capable). The higher the number, the more luxurious the ship’s recreation facility. The accompanying tables provides general guidelines for what comes with each rating level and what the standard is per Ship Type.

Recreation systems cost Power—2 Power per point of Recreation (thus, a ship with Recreation 7 pays 14 Power to keep all of its entertainment facilities, excluding holodecks, operating). If an enemy attacks the ship, Recreation systems are usually among the first to be turned off. If only some of the ship’s recreation systems are in use, the Narrator can reduce the Power cost proportionately.

(Klingon: The Klingons scorn advanced recreation facilities the same way they do comfortable quarters. To them, a gymnasium or combat practice area is all the recreation they need. Their ships rarely have holodecks (except for use in training) or dining facilities other than simple mess halls.

(Klingon ships do not have Recreation ratings higher than 8. Use the accompanying tables to determine the recreation facilities on a Klingon ship.)

(Romulan: Romulan ships use the same Recreation Ratings as Star Fleet vessels. The accompanying table indicates the typical Recreation Rating by ship type.)

SFC Technology Index

Recreation Facility ratings represent more of a recreational capacity than a standardized system. As such, Recreation Facilities have no index.
