9.12 Hull Polarization

Cost: Varies (see table)
Power Requirement: Varies (see table)
Available: 2110

Hull polarization grids are similar to hull plating, both superficially and in effect, and are often the next advance in defensive systems. The hull plates are constructed from "smart" materials so that when a charge is run through the hull the molecules rearrange, taking on a substantially more resilient form. Not only does this make the vessel harder to damage by increasing its Resistance protection (and at a fraction of hull plating’s cost), but it can also help distribute damage across the surrounding area.

While powered, the grid adds Resistance to the affected hull section. This bonus applies against energy, kinetic, and collision damage. It may not be reinforced in a particular facing, transferred between sections, or used to absorb damage before it reaches the hull; resolve damage against the hull normally after applying the added Resistance.

A character may over-polarize one hull section for one round by making a Moderate (6) Shipboard Systems (Hull) Test. Spend an additional 3 Power; on success, increase the grid’s Resistance bonus in that section by +2 for the round. On a failure, the added Power is lost and the grid gives no extra benefit. On a botch, the grid is disabled in that section until repaired.

If the vessel possesses an active grid, a character may attempt the normal hull-polarity maneuver to break a tractor lock: one round, 6 Power, Systems Engineering (Shields) test against the tractor strength, with the existing +2 Test Result bonus.
