5.1 Crew, Passenger and Evacuation Complement by Vessel Category

Units within Star Fleet are generally broken down into 10 categories: capital, courier, cruiser, destroyer / frigate, escort, medical, research/laboratory, scout, surveyor and transport. The number of crew typically required to man these ships differs between the categories, and by century. The tables below detail the average number of crewmen assigned to each category for each 100 SUs used by that ship class, by century.

A ship’s Passenger complement is usually about 10-20% of its Crew, but this may vary depending upon the nature of the ship (a personnel transport or medical ship is built to carry more passengers than an explorer or cruiser). Accommodations for passengers are "bought" according to the types of quarters appropriate for the passengers. A ship’s Evac complement ranges from 5-15 times the size of its Crew (again, this may vary from ship to ship) and is not accounted for in any SUs.

Klingon: The accompanying tables provide information on Klingon crew complements. The statistics represent average percentages by department; individual ships’ complements may vary considerably from these figures.

Compared to an equivalent Star Fleet vessel, a Klingon ship usually has a much smaller number of officers. Since every Klingon crewmember should know how to do many different things aboard a ship (a well-rounded warrior is a more dangerous crewmember, after all), and how to perform his duties without excessive instruction from superiors, the Klingons find they require fewer officers to keep their ships running smoothly. Klingon ships also have fewer medical, scientific, and operations personnel than comparative Star Fleet vessels, and far more tactical and security crewmembers.

On Klingon vessels, a ship’s Passenger complement often greatly exceeds its crew, sometimes by as much as 200-500%. This reflects the way Klingons use their ships to transport large numbers of troops. A ship’s Evacuation complement typically ranges from 5-15 times the size of the Crew, though this also varies ship to ship.

Romulan: A Romulan ship’s Passenger complement is usually about 10-20% of its Crew, but this may vary depending upon the nature of the ship (a personnel transport or medical ship can typically carry more passengers than a Dreadnought or Warbird). A ship’s Evac complement ranges from 5-15 times the size of its Crew (again, this may vary from ship to ship).
