Campaign Timeline

  • The joint Apollo-Soyuz mission between America and Russia marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation between Earth’s two most prominent spacefaring nations.[1]
  • The Russian Venera 9 and Venera 10 space probes send back the first images from the surface of the planet Venus before the intense atmospheric heat and density render them inoperable.[1]
  • Gerald K. O’Neil authors the book The High Frontier. It is a landmark publication concerning the issues in actually building a full-scale colony in space. The term "O’Neil cylinder" and the concept of the LaGrange points (L-4, L-5, etc.) for ideally locating a space station relative to a planet are popularized by this work.[1]
