Star Fleet Ground Attack Marines
The Star Fleet Ground Attack Marines (SGAM), later the Star Fleet Marine Corps (SMC), is a direct descendant of the United Earth's Military Assault Commandos (MACO), as well as the naval infantry of the other UFP founding members that participated in the Romulan War. Upon the UFP Star Fleet's founding, the SFGAM was consolidated from available ground forces into several expeditionary forces, each led by a Lieutenant General (who themselves reported to the Commandant of the Marines).
These expeditionary forces are deployed from each of the five founding worlds into major combat areas of operation (CAO) and are comprised of the number of divisions determined to be appropriate. Logistics Command maintains transports to deliver Marines to combat areas and assault ships to the battlefield, whether they be on a planetary surface or other stellar body.
