Remote Surveys
Remote surveys are conducted at extremely distant ranges. Since the early 20th century on Earth, astronomers have been able to determine from afar the basic characteristics of a star, such as type, mass, chemical composition. When a chart of a sector or other region of space is first prepared, the location and types of stars are presumed to come from a database compiled from prior observations.
| Determine star fields | |
|---|---|
| Step A: Roll 1d100 | |
| 01 – 73 | empty space |
| 74 – 82 | possible unusual item (go to Step B) |
| 83 – 00 | star system (go to Table 2) |
| Alternate Step A: Roll 1d100 | (for when object positions are already known) |
| 01 - 33 | possible unusual item (go to Step B) |
| 34 - 00 | single star system (go to Table 2) |
| Step B - Unusual Item: Roll 1d100 | |
| 01 – 17 | unusual itemNote 1 (Table 3) |
| 18 – 59 | binary star system (Table 2, roll for largest)Note 2 |
| 60 – 87 | trinary star system (Table 2, roll for largest)Note 2 |
| 88 – 00 | quadruple star system (Table 2, roll for largest)Note 2 |
- Note 1: An unusual item has to be approached just like a star does, in order to be mapped. Determination of the type of unusual item cannot be made until it is studied individually.
- Note 2: Then roll for next star(s); re-roll any that are larger (in mass) than the largest. The Spectral Class table has the details required for this.
| Step A: Roll 1d10 | |
| 01 | Non-Main Sequence star |
| 02 – 10 | Main Sequence star |
| Step B - Non-Main Sequence: Roll 1d100 | |
| 01 – 67 | Class D white dwarf |
| 68 - 84 | IR Sequence star (go to Step D) |
| 85 - 96 | Class Z1 stellar blackhole |
| 97 - 00 | Class Z2 intermediate mass blackhole |
| Step C - Main Sequence (Simple): Roll 1d100 | (Alternate: detailed Spectral Class table) |
| 01 - 10 | Class M “Red” |
| 11 - 30 | Class K “Orange” |
| 31 - 55 | Class G “Yellow” |
| 56 - 75 | Class F “Yellowish-white” |
| 76 - 87 | Class A “White” |
| 88 - 95 | Class B “Blue-white” |
| 96- 00 | Class O “Blue” |
| Step D - IR Sequence: Roll 1d6 | |
| 01 – 02 | Class C “Red/IR” |
| 03 – 04 | Class S “Infrared” |
| 05 – 06 | Class X “X-Ray” |
