The game definition will clearly spell out 'destroyer' as a primarily combatant vessel capable of performing non-combatant roles within Starfleet, though in a comparatively limited way. Physically, they are generally single-hulled vessels with two nacelles (each on a pylon), neither notably nimble at sublight nor fast at warp (though not particularly slow, either). They tend to be reasonably armed with phasers and more likely to be armed with more torpedo launchers than a similarly-sized cruiser. In wartime, the destroyer serves as the more numerous vessel in fleet and task force actions, serving as screeners for the cruisers and more high value command and warships and the primary combatant for anti-ship roles. They will be used in installation and planetary assaults to protect transport ships and provide gunnery support for grounded troops. In peacetime, they are rather limited, due to their focus on weaponry systems but they can be used to patrol near to hostile borders (on a secondary tier to the patrols of border frigates and perimeter ships) and along troubled lanes. They can also be utilized by installing modules to enhance sensor capability (either exploratory or signals collections), as well as with enhanced weaponry pods.
