Sector 001, sometimes known as Sol Sector, differs from all other sectors in that it is comprised of exactly one solar system, Sol. The reason for this distinction is because the United Federation of Planets islocated on Sol III, better known as Earth. As the center of the Federation, and for cartographic reasons, the system forms a corner of eight other sectors. Because of this unique 'shape,' it also is the only sector to fall within both the Alpha and Beta quadrants.

Sector 001, sometimes known as Sol Sector, differs from all other sectors in that it is comprised of exactly one solar system, Sol. The reason for this distinction is because the United Federation of Planets is located on Sol III, better known as Earth. As the center of the Federation, and for cartographic reasons, the system forms a corner of eight other sectors. Because of this unique 'shape,' it also is the only sector to fall within both the Alpha and Beta quadrants.
