USS Fletcher, Verne class, explodes, scattering debris into the upper atmosphere after a warp drive failure in Earth’s gravity well. Verne vessels in the Sol system at the time of the accident are assigned sublight duties and a destroyer designation, assisting the Liberty class in guarding Earth’s front yard against the next alien intrusion.^[1]

The Ascender, Conestoga class, reaches the slightly more demanding conditions of the 36 Ophiuci III planetary system and successfully establishes a colony.^[2]
