The Deputy Secretary of Star Fleet is the second senior civilian (under the President) within the Star Fleet chain of command. He works directly for the Secretary of Star Fleet and assumes some of the duties of that office, as assigned. He is also slated to perform as the Acting Secretary of Star Fleet in the event the actual Secretary is unavailable. The position is filled by either career-long politicians or Star Fleet veterans, and usually the opposite of whatever the standing Secretary is.

While the character is named and oftentimes a former PC, the Deputy Secretary of Star Fleet is not a PC.
