Commercial entities (i.e., companies) produce and assemble much of Star Fleet's assets. However, each one is limited by its infrastructure in the quantity of what it produces. When a company enters the canon game, its size is identified either by the available data or through random rolls.

Corporate Starting Size
Roll 1d20 Result
1-6 Small Business
7-14 Medium Company
15-19 Large Corporation
20 Roll again; if 20 again;
Immense Megacorp

The size of the company determines how much production (not assembly) it can provide within a month:

  • Small Business: 1,000 to 10,000 mt/month
  • Medium Company: 10,000 to 100,000 mt/month
  • Large Corporation: 100,000 to 750,000 mt/month
  • Immense Megacorporation : 750,000 mt/month and up

Once a year, each company rolls on 1d100 to see if it expands or even possibly reduces in size.

Corporate Growth / Decline
Roll 1d100 Result
1 Roll 1d10: on 1 (1-3, if decreased in size previous year) ceases operations permanently (bought up, scandal, business failure)
2-6 Reduces in size by 10%
7-86 No change
87-94 Increases in size by 5%
95-98 Increases in size by 10%
99-100 Increases in size by 20%

Several caveats about these rolls:

  • Rolls of natural 1-6 or 100 are automatic.
  • If a company increased in size the year prior, 10 is added to the next year's roll.
  • If a company decreased in size the year prior, 10 is subtracted from the next year's roll.
  • When a megacorp increases above a 1million mt/month capacity, it is very likely to add the additional infrastructure on a different planet, maybe one closer to necessary resources. If it decreases below that amount, then one facility on a planet is shuttered (in totality), which may require a reduction of more than the minimal 10%.
  • Companies that devote significant production capability to civilian sales (i.e., non-Star Fleet) receive additional roll additions (see below).

As companies that sell products to customers other than (only) Star Fleet are healthier—not being dependent upon one client—they enjoy positive benefits to the growth role. However, this requires that they devote a certain portion of their production capability to their civilian products for the entire year, thereby being unavailable for Star Fleet's production requirements (except in times of War or Gearing Up). The following table provides the roll bonuses for expansion:
