The Eastern Coalition, also known as the ECON, was an alliance of Asian states on Earth in the early 21st century. It was comprised of Korea, China, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Vietnam, Iran, Japan and the nations of the Eurasian Confederation. The coalition was formed by Lee Kuan in 2031, comprised in large part of nations formerly united under the Great Khanate of Khan Noonien Singh during the late 20th century.[1][2]
In 2031, the Eastern Coalition, though not yet formalized as an alliance, was among those groups which pooled its resources to help divert the orbits of a number of asteroids on path to impact with the planet, threatening all life on Earth. Their cooperative success led them to the more formal union.[1]
The Eastern Coalition was a major rival to the United States and the European Union (both political blocs being the primary powers behind the New United Nations). In the 2030s and the 2040s, relations between the rivals continued to degenerate. This led to the outbreak of World War III on 1 May 2053.[1]
The Eastern Coalition states, which ceded their individual sovereignty to officially form one super-nation in 2055, were amongst those hardest hit; cities such as Karachi and New Delhi were damaged when nuclear weapons detonated over them. As late as 2079, many societies were still mired in lawlessness and chaos as a result of the Post-Atomic Horror.[1]
Almost a hundred years later (in 2130), the Eastern Coalition became a very vocal proponent of a collaborative planetary government, after receiving the focused recovery efforts led by the United Earth Defense Pact over a period of about five decades. It ceded it's interplanetary credentials (which had all but been utilized completely by the UEDP) in 2150 with the signing of the Traité d'Unification.
