Command ships have different capabilities:
* Task Force: they provide Command, Control, and Communication (C<sup>3</sup>) requirements needed at the task force level, which handles a single defined task or activity.
* "Basic Fleet-level operations": this is the same, but presumes a much larger force—the entirety of the given numbered fleet—operating together in one (relatively) close formation.
* "Theater-wide HQ": essentially controls all military forces (naval and otherwise) operating spread out over a given theater of operation.
