The '''Chief of Staff''' for the Secretary of Star Fleet is the gatekeeper to the highest person within Star Fleet. Oftentimes, the "Coz" is himself a retired Star Fleet officer, maybe a long-time friend and personal confidante of the Secretary, but may also be a career bureaucrat. He is the direct-report for the three other chiefs, as well as the two Star Fleet officers that fall outside the uniformed chain of command (the [[Judge Advocate General]] and the [[Inspector General]]). The Chief of Staff generally works behind the scenes to solve problems, mediate disputes, and deal with issues before they are brought to the Secretary. Often Chiefs of Staff act as a confidante and adviser to the Secretary, acting as a sounding board for ideas.
