In some cases, the historical designation cutter is used instead for vessels of this description.<br /> <br /> <br /> ==Game Definition==<br /> Runabouts are, essentially, oversized shuttlecraft, usually attached to starbases, planetary bases and other installations rather than for shipboard use. They are utilized as short-ranged couriers, transports and shuttles between locations within systems and -when equipped with warp drive- nearby systems, especially when starships are either not available or inappropriate. They can be fitted out with specialty modules to increase sensor, shielding or weaponry capability, though other larger vessels are generally better in those specialty roles. Though often named with the preface USS by their controlling command, they are solely tracked via their hull numbers and are never assigned a permanent crew.</div>
