History
Saint-Louis de Ha! Ha! is a binary star system situated just within the upper periphery of the Alshanai Rift. The system is distinguished by an extensively populated Oort Cloud comprised of asteroids (rather than comets), suggesting a turbulent end to whatever planets had formed around the twin stars, possibly as a result of its position within the anomalous region. While historically dismissed as a "worthless collection of tritanium and gold" in terms of mineral wealth, the system holds immense strategic value as it sits on the edge of a prominent navigational route through the volatile spatial anomalies of the Rift.[2]
The location became a significant flashpoint in the escalating cold war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire in September 2261. During this period, it was the site of an intensive "cat-and-mouse battle" between Star Fleet’s DESRON 2 and elements of the Klingon 2nd Fleet Group as both powers sought to monitor and control the vital passage. Beyond its military significance, the area is part of a region known as an infamous "Dead Zone characterized by dangerous storms and the system has developed a reputation as a "smugglers' cove".[2]

Notes
- GJ 3408 is an actual binary star system.
- The name "Saint-Louis de Ha! Ha!" is never explained in the Edge of Midnight materials, but the "Ha! Ha!" is an archaic French term for an unexpected obstacle or the abrupt end of a path. This linguistic origin aligns with the system's described location at a critical navigation point near a dangerous spatial anomaly.
- The location of the system within the rift is SFC-canon, as is the strong leaning towards the Oort/asteroid cloud being a part of an established star; its importance to navigation of the rift is largely that of The Business of Risk. The Edge of Midnight maps indicate the system is 38 lightyears higher up the Z-axis than indicated here; SFC placed it at -18.56 Z-axis to place it within the Alshanai Rift, at the location depicted by the same maps.
