Perimeter Ship

Defense-oriented small starship dedicated to long duration border patrol missions. Designation used in the mid- to late 23rd century for Kiaga, Agilis, Akula, Engage and Kirsanov classes, but largely abandoned in the 24th century with the introduction of numerous frigates for border patrol duty. Also called perimeter action ship.

Game Definition

Perimeter ships were specialized vessels that would have otherwise been designated as frigates and destroyers, but were designed and employed to operate along borders of threat states with the equipment and training to give any border violators considerable distress until larger and more numerous combatants could arrive on-scene. Due to the long, often boring but always stressful nature of these border patrols, the vessels were usually equipped with blue and gold crews, allowing an almost near-constant presence. In the brief period in which they were utilized, they rated the special designation because of their more specialized mission areas.
