Be they Bipedal or Quads, Utility (or Industrial) Mechs can often go where no other unit can. Used for construction, forestry, mining, police duty, exploration as well as other functions, a Utility Mech may be expensive, but they often prove their worth.

==Overview:==
The "Fire Fighter" flame suppression workmech was designed in 2423 by the
now-defunct SafetyCo (a subsidiary of FirWorx Inc.) as an on-site
fast-response unit to fight fires and assist in dealing with other disasters.
Unfortunately, the design's slow land speed prevented it from reaching far-off
fires before the burning area was turned into a smouldering shell, and was too
expensive to be widely deployed. Thus, the "Fire Fighter" could only be
deployed in small areas, such as military compounds, airfields, and industrial
complexes.

==Capabilities:==
The sprayer mounted on the unit's arm is capable of dispensing many different
types of chemical, from foam fire suppressant to a de-icing agent to plain
water. With minor modifications, the sprayer can even dispense accelerant,
allowing the unit to function as an incendiary vehicle.

Not only is the unit able to fight (or start) fires, it is capable of
assisting in rescue operations, thanks to its capacity of lifting and moving
multi-ton pieces of rubble.

==Deployment==
Fire suppression 'mechs are deployed at almost every airbase, landing strip,
starport, factory, and military base that can afford them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Packmule LoaderMech is one of Caterpillar Heavy Industries' first
UtilityMechs, and one of their first few successful designs.  The Packmule was
first produced in the North American Complex on Terra in 2362, and even after
the Terra plants switched to newer designs, the Packmule was still being
produced in the secondary Complexes within the Inner Sphere.  The Packmule
LoaderMech has the distinction of having the longest production run of any CHI
design.

==Capabilities:==
The Packmule LoaderMech is one of Caterpillar's most simple and robust
UtilityMech designs.  A twenty-ton 'Mech, the Packmule utilizes a very open
construction allowing for easy maintance on all of the Packmule's parts.
Humaniod in configuration, the Packmule features two long arms, giving
unparalleled reach when handling cargo.  Each arm ends in a standard
vise-grip, which is capable of handling up to Type 5 Cargo Containers.  The
blades feature an ingenius design, allowing them to be rotated for use with
Type II and III standard pallets.  Original Packmules featured a
Caterpillar-60 Diesel Engine, but as time passed newer engine types were
utilized.  Newer Packmules use Caterpillars 60 Hybrid Engine, which can run of
virtually anything combustible, or if the batteries are charged electricity.
Mounted over each shoulder are Caterpillar 10-ton Type 3 Lift Hoists on
extendable booms.  Each hoist can lift a total of ten tons alone, and twenty
tons combined.  Cockpit controls were modelled after conventional tractors.
Foot pedals control forward movement and turning, while two joysticks control
waist movement.  Arms are controlled by a seperate set of waldos, allowing for
finer manipulation than would normally be allowed.  The Packmule uses the
standard Autogyro removing the need for a neurohelmet, though operators
typically still wear some sort of headgear.  For protection, two tons of
"armor" cover all of the vital joints, and allow the Packmule to survive the
dings and scrapes of working a Drop Port.  The only major flaw with the
Packmule is the inability to be run the engine at full power without a serious
heat buildup.

==Variants:==
A variant of the Packmule downgrades the engine to a Caterpillar-40.
Performance loss is minimal, and rarely missed on a bustling Drop Port or
warehouse complex.  This allowed engineers to install additional cooling,
allowing the Packmule to be run without any consideration for heat.  This also
made the Packmule more ideal for use on frontier worlds, where conditions were
best described as rough.

==Deployment==
The Packmule LoaderMech became a common site in Drop Ports across the Inner
Sphere and Periphery.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
While capable, the M1 "Paul Bunyan" LoggerMech was quickly losing favor with
Logging companies.  This was due to the M1's inability to handle the rigors of
Logger work.  Sawdust would get in to the exposed components, fouling them up,
while the thin layer of armored skin was unable to handle falling limbs and
trees.  By 2374, Caterpillar Heavy Industries had fixed these problems, by
releasing the M2374 LoggerMech.

==Capabilities:==
The M2374 LoggerMech weighs only five tons more, requiring little change in
the overall chassis or components. The new LoggerMech uses a 75 Gas Turbine
Engine, which offers more power then a comparable diesel or alcohol burning
engine.  The M2374 rettains the Logger Chainsaw in the right arm, which draws
it power directly from the engine.  The left arm carries a three-claw grasping
claw.  To keep the engine within normal temperatures, two cooling heat sinks
were installed, one directly under the floor of the cab and one under the
engine.  To protect against the rigors of logging such as falling branches,
trees, and the abundance of sawdust, five tons of steel plating protect the
vital components and cab.

==Variants:==
As the LoggerMech is intended for only one purpose, there have been no
official variants produced by Caterpillar Heavy Industries.  However,
unofficial variants which have popped up usually replace the Logger Chainsaw
with another type of cutting tool, or sometimes a heavy-duty winch for hauling
large timber.

==Deployment==
The M2374 LoggerMech soon replaced the majority of Paul Punyans in existance,
becoming the most popular single-saw LoggerMech.  CHI was producing two
hundred a year within the first six years, with over a thousand produced
annually from then on from licensing and ten factories.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
In 2392, the market for UtilityMechs was booming.  And at the top was
Caterpillar Heavy Industries.  Though they did not build the first
UtilityMech, they quickly established themselves  as the leaders in the
UtilityMech field.  And to stay on top they needed new and revolutionary
designs.  In August 2392, just before the harvest, CHI unveiled its latest
design; the
M2392 AgroMech.

==Capabilities:==
The M2392 AgroMech was intended to replace major farming conglomerates' fleets
of earlier Farmer and Farmer II designs with a much more dependable design.

The new AgroMech weighs a total of 35-tons, fifteen tons heavier then the
original Farmer and one of the heaviest of its day.  The Caterpillar
industrial 7-ton Chassis could support an amazing twenty-eight tons of
equipment.  Whereas previous and later chassis gave CHI designs either a
humanoid or hunchback design, the chassis used in the AgroMech gave the M2392
an ape-like appearance, which proved a boon.  To power the enormous 'Mech,
engineers fitted the M2392 with Caterpillar's 105 Multi-Fuel Turbine, which
could move the AgroMech at top speeds of fifty-four kph.  At the end of the
long, ape-like arms are 3-meter wide combines.  When deployed, the M2392
AgroMech appears like an ape, walking on all fours.  When not in use, the arms
can be retracted up at the elbow.  In case the combines get damaged, they can
quickly be replaced in less then an hour.  The mounting points are universal,
and the combines can be removed for other tools such as tillers or even claws
for removing large debris or trees.  For additional utility, the M2392
AgroMech features a lift hoist over the right shoulder, which can lift 17.5
tons.  To protect the AgroMech against the dangers of dust, debris, and
nesting animals, six-tons of heavy plating gives abnormal protection for a
UtilityMech.  To keep the 'Mech cool, the unit was outfitted with a complete
cooling system which could dissipate 150% of any heat generated.  This,
coupled with the heavy armor made the M2392 AgroMech ideal on frontier worlds,
among other uses.  The M2392 AgroMech uses the patented Caterpillar AutoGyro,
and like all Caterpillar designs is easy to maintain.  Off the shelf
components can easily be used, and the design shares 80% - 90% commonality
between the Logger-, Miner-, and WorkMechs released later that year.

==Variants:==
No official combat modifications exist, as they are all done on an individual
basis.  Still, several variants have appeared to be common.  Removing the lift
hoist, combat units have installed missile racks, machine guns, and rocket
launchers.  Some remove one or both of the combines for claws with the blades
sharpened and light autocannons in the 30mm to 90mm range.  Some variants also
add additional armor plating, and remove one-third of the cooling system.

==Deployment==
The M2392 AgroMech was a common sight among periphery worlds, where its
hardiness fit right in with the rustic populous.  When the fall of the Star
League followed by the Succession Wars, many AgroMechs were cannalibilized
like most of CHI units.  Still, a few remained on farms, and like the
BattleMech, were being used after centuries.

After the Word of Black Jihad and the formation of the Republic of the Sphere,
the reborn Caterpillar Heavy Industries began reopening the archives,
restarting production on past successful designs.  One of those selected was
the M2392 AgroMech.  The uniqueness of the design would prove useful years
later.  When the HPG net went down and open rebellion broke out, forces were
turning to converted UtilityMechs.  With its heavy armor and redundant cooling
system, the M2392 AgroMech proved a perfect candidate.  The combines could
literally move down infantry, and removing the lift hoist provided a whole
host of options.  Being a Caterpillar design, such modifications were easy to
do.  The only problem was with the AutoGyro.  Though a NeuroHelmet was not
needed, the AutoGyro couldn't handle the rigors of combat as quickly as a
normal Gyro, restricting its maneuverability.  Though uneeded on the combat
fields of farming, it has proven a liability in true combat.

In the late 24th Century, Caterpillar Heavy Industries was rapidly expanding
in the UtilityMech market, filling every niche they could find.  One niche
they attempted to fill was what they called the InfernoMech; a UtilityMech
designed specifically for fighting fires.  Intended for municiple work, the
original InfernoMech was a marginal success.  However, the poor speed and lack
of sufficent 'Mech access roads kept the InfernoMech from reaching a majority
of the fires.  the InfernoMech did gain popularity in large industrial
complexes, chemical factories, and drop ports, where the ruggedness and
durability of the InfernoMech proved a boon.  The limited speed proved to not
be as cumbersome, with the InfernoMech already on site.

By the middle of the 27th Century, Caterpillar Heavy Industries had created
various InfernoMechs, with varying degrees of success.  The newest
InfernoMech, the M2640, is the latest, and makes use of several new
experimental technologies.

==Capabilities:==
The M2640 InfernoMech is neither the largest nor smallest InfernoMech produced
in the history of Caterpillar Heavy Industries, though in its short lifespan
it did prove to be one of the more effective.  The M2640 has a humanoid
appearance,  though the body is an oval pod shape, with arms and legs
attached.  Mounted to the rear is the CAT 105 Electric/Multi-Fuel Engine,
which gives the InfernoMech enough power to move at top speeds of 54 kph.
Though slow for a metroplex city, it is sufficent to move the InfernoMech out
of the hangar and to the fire onsite.  To improve the versatility, engineers
made sure the engine housing was large enough and that it could run off of
nearly any power planet, be it an internal combustion engine or one of the
hightech fusion plants.  Slung beneath the torso are a pair of CPS5000 water
cannons, which feed from a pair of one-ton tanks.  The tanks themselves
feature ten meters of connectable line, allowing the water cannons to be
hooked up to any local water source, for a near limitless supply.   Each arm
features a pair of SafeGuard fire extinguishers.  The SafeGuard models can
make use of a variety of chemicals, and feed from a one ton tank mounted at
the shoulder.  To withstand the high temperatures that can be found around
fires, engineers at CHI used two new experimental technologies, the first
being new heat sinks.  Comparable to military-strength double heat sinks, the
CHI heat sinks were not as efficent, and quickly degraded over time.  The J8
coolant used in the heat sinks also proved to be extremely toxic, and had the
ability to eat through myomer.  Though other coolants were used,  they proved
to be even less efficent.  The second piece of technology was a new type of
external plating, which was given a reflective coating.  This was able to
reflect the heat and flames, reducing their effects on the InfernoMech.
Unlike traditional controls, the  M2460 InfernoMech makes use of experimental
waldo controls, for a higher grade of precision.  The large bubble canopy
offers an excellent view of the surroundings.  Each arm ends in the standard
vise gripe, but like many of CHI's designs can easily be replaced for grasping
pronged claws for more rugged work.  Mounted in each foot is a storage locker,
which is typically stored with rescue gear and tools.  A battery of four
high-powered searchlights are mounted on a rollbar above the body, each
multi-directional and with adjustable beam.

==Variants:==
Though the advanced cooling system kept the InfernoMech safe, its poor quality
often prompted many to remove it for standard heat sinks.  Though cutting the
efficeny in half, it was still typically enough to keep the InfernoMech out of
trouble.  The reflective plating proved difficult to repair, so once the
plates were ruined they were often replaced with standard plating.  An
official variation came about in the early 28th Century, which replaced the
engine with a new fusion model.

Targeting & Tracking System:  Dalban AQ

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Halkins Machinery Ltd of Pobeda in the Lyran Commonwealth is well known for
it's production of construction and earthmoving vehicles of all types. When
Renfred Halkins retired and handed over directorship of the company to his
son, Keith Halkins first act was to design a totally new line for his
company.

Moving away from raditional caterpillar vehicles Keith chose instead to
produce a utility mech. This was nothing new for the Inner Sphere but was a
first for Halkins Machinery. His first design was purely civilian in nature
and rolled off the new line in 3031. It wasn't until 3036 that Keith was
approached by an officer from the Lyran Quartermasters office.

The Commonwealth's Engineering Corp wanted a new utility mech to support it's
engineers in the field and, given the low cost and easy maintenance of Halkins
engineering mech, the Quartermaster offered Keith a contract.

In order to keep costs low Keith purchased as many old, stripped down Scorpion
mech chassis as he could find. Basing his mech on an existing chassis would
save a great deal of research and design costs and would ensure that adequate
parts were avialable when needed. When his SAPR-1A Engineer finally walked off
the production line the Quartermasters office was very pleased with the
result.

==Capabilities:==
The SAPR-1A Engineer is based on a quad chassis to give it superior stability.
The modified Scorpion chassis provided a good basis for the designers to
outfit the mech with the heavy equipment that the field engineers would
require.

A 160 rated standard fusion engine gives the engineer a modest walking speed
of 43 km/h and a top speed of nearly 65 km/h. The addition of 4 Lexington
Lifter jump jets enables the Engineer to easily gain vantage points required
to complete it's assigned task.

When it came to choosing the equipment that the utility mech would carry the
options were few and simple. Forsaking the standard 1 ton pre-fabed cargo bays
that were available, Halkins designed and produced their own 3 ton heavy cargo
bay which sits in the left torso of the mech. A 3 ton swivel mounted lift
hoist sits atop the mech and underneath, just back from the cockpit is the
Halkins Custom Bridge-layer gear. This 5 ton machine uses actuators and
grapples to set the bridge plates into position before ground teams set them.
The use of the bridge-laying equipment requires an additional person to
manipulate it while the mech pilots holds the Engineer in position so the
cockpit of the mech is equipped for dual occupancy.

The mech sports three Coventry Light Autoguns in forward firing positions and
the whole package is protected by 8.5 tons of standard armor. 10 standard
heatsinks ensure the pilot and operator have a cool ride.

==Battle History:==
Elements of Ryan's Rebels launched a raid on Bensinger in late 3038 taking
advantage of the confusion following a major earthquake on the main continent.
A relief force including combat engineers had been brought in from Somerset to
help the quake stricken region two days before the Rebels landed. Ryan's
Rebels destroyed the only two bridges to Eastholm Island and the town of
Eastholm itself.

The local militia called in the 12th Somerset Combat Engineers to assist and,
even under sporadic fire from the Rebels mechs, the lance of SAPR-1A's had
repaired one bridge to the island in a mere four hours. The Rebel's escaped
unharmed before the militia could engage them but the effort of the Engineers
was instrumental in forcing the Rebels off-world without their booty.

==Variants:==
The only known varient is the SAPR-1M which replaces the bridge laying
equipment and heavy cargo bay with a mining drill and rock cutter.

==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:==
Smoking Joe
===========
Smoking Joe is the name of the SAPR-1A belonging to Private Vince Cullen of
the 12th Somerset Combat Engineers. While his three lancemates worked on
repairing a bridge destroyed by Ryan's Rebels on Bensinger, Private Cullen
jumped his mech across the ruined bridge and engaged the Rebels with his
utility mechs machine guns.

The light mechs of the Rebels were forced to take cover giving the rest of the
12th the time needed to repair the bridge. When Private Cullen  returned to
his lance the mechs machine gun barrels were still smoking from the constant
fire. The Smoking Joe's ammunition bin was empty.

==Deployment==
SAPR-1A's can be found in many Combat Engineering unit's throughout the Inner
Sphere though they are concentrated most heavily within the Lyran
Commonwealth's units.

==Overview:==
Lyle Tenason was an ordinary agricultural supplier, selling everything from
sacks of grain to heavy agricultural equipment. One day he walked into Archies
General Store and purchased his usual ticket in the Oriente Lottery. Archie
happened to comment (as he often did) that this would be Lyle's lucky week.
"Yeah, and pigs might fly", came Lyles typical reply.

Lyle Tenason was the sole winner in the Oriente Lottery which netted him
enough that, with the help of a business loan, he could fulfil his dream of
owning an agricultural machine manufacturing plant. Thus, echoing the words he
spoke to Archie, Flying Pig Industries was born. Now Lyle had some planning to
do.

Lyle wanted to produce agricultural utility mechs, but he wanted to hit the
market with something jaw-dropping. While watching the latest installment of
The Immortal Warrior Lyle had a sudden revelation and the Omni-Ute was brought
to life.

==Capabilities:==
Lyle Tenason wanted to produce an agricultural utility mech like nothing else
on the market. His inspiration came from watching a television show that
featured Omni-Mechs doing battle. Lyle decided that only an Omni-Utility Mech
would be good enough for his factory.

Using a 40 ton Utility Mech chassis as a base Lyle's team has forged a truly
unique piece of equipment. The chassis sports a massive claw in place of it's
left hand which comes standard with every Omni-Ute. A General Mechanics 120
ICE engine provides ample power while keeping costs significantly low and six
tons of standard armor protect the Mech and it's pilot from accidents. The
base Mech comes fitted with 2 standard heat sinks.

The Omni-Ute is delivered with one set of attachments of the purchasers
choice. Additional implements can also be purchased through Flying Pig
Industries.

==Deployment==
Omni-Ute sales have boomed since it's introduction in February 3067. These Utility
Mechs can now be found in mining and agricultural areas throughout the Inner
Sphere and Periphery. It is believed that many Periphery powers have purchased
their Omni-Ute's merely to reverse engineer the Omni capability of the Mech
for military purposes.

Unfortunately, per the Precentor Martial, Utility Mechs aren't allowed to be Omnis. Sad However, as the post is missing from the CBT site, I'm sure we could possibly overlook it. Wink

Looks good to me. Though I do wonder why it has the Claw. It isn't good for holding stuff or other building uses. It only really good for battle in fact, so I'm wondering why it is on this design.

Also, the fluff suggests that whoever wrote this fluff is looking BACK to 3067 but I was under the impression that this was going to be IN 3067.

Discord: Damn, didn't realise that. Perhaps that's something that should be brought up with Rick. If it's illegal then I understand completely that you can't use it.

Medron: I thought the Claw would make a good grasping/grappling implement. Ooops, my bad... Embarassed. I'd be happy to redesign it without the Claw? I have a bad habit of writing fluff in the past tense so sorry about that. However, it could be that the Omni-Ute was produced in February of 3067 and the writer is wrote the fluff in a later month... Wink

The Claw is a clumsy instrument that can damage stuff when trying to pick it up. It is a good combat thing because you WANT to damage stuff in combat, but in working you don't.

As for the fluff, all I noticed is that the final bits of fluff seemed to have been written from a long time in the future, saying that the company and 'Mech became very successful.

As for Omni-Utilities...I haven't seen any ruling against them so I say we go with it. Smile

Cool! Thanks for the heads up. I'll edit my post with a Claw-less design shortly.
